Free Sales Tax Calculator

I once drove 20 miles to buy a laptop in Delaware just to dodge sales tax. True story. Now I just use this calculator to figure out exactly what I'll owe — pick your state or plug in a custom rate, and it does the rest.

Nobody sees your numbers — not even me. This sales tax calculator works entirely in your browser. No uploads, no tracking, no ads. Just a straightforward tool that I built after getting tired of mental math at the checkout counter.

How I stopped guessing sales tax (and you can too)

A few years ago I bought a camera online and the tax at checkout was way higher than I expected. I sat there manually calculating 8.25% on a calculator app and still got it wrong. Frustrating.

That's why I built this free sales tax calculator. It's dead simple. If you know the sticker price, type it in and pick your state from the dropdown — I've included all 50 states and DC with their base sales tax rates. The tool instantly shows you the tax amount and the total you'll actually pay. And if your city or county tacks on extra (looking at you, Chicago), you can override the rate manually.

It also works backwards. You know the final total on a receipt and want to know how much was tax? Switch to the "total after tax" tab, enter the amount, and it reverse‑calculates the original price and tax. I use that all the time when I'm splitting a dinner bill that already includes tax.

What makes this sales tax tool actually useful

🗺 Real State Rates

I pulled the base rates for all 50 states and DC. Pick your state and the sales tax calculator by state automatically fills in the rate. No more Googling "what's the tax in Texas" every time.

🔢 Custom Rate Override

Some cities and counties add their own sales tax on top. If your local rate is 8.75% instead of the state's 6%, just type it in. The free tax calculator uses whatever number you give it.

↩ Reverse Calculation

Already paid and want to know how much was tax? Flip to the "total after tax" mode. This reverse sales tax calculator figures out the pre‑tax price and the exact tax amount from your receipt total.

🔏 Works Offline

Everything is done in your browser — no data ever leaves your device. You can save this page and use it without internet. I made it that way because I don't trust random tax sites with my purchase info.

Common questions (and the honest answers)

How accurate are the state tax rates in this calculator?

I used the base state‑level rates as of 2024. Most states also have local taxes (city, county, transit) that can add 1‑5% more. If you know your total local rate, override it in the custom field. The tool is meant to give you a solid estimate, not a final tax filing number.

How do I calculate sales tax on a purchase?

Multiply the price before tax by the tax rate (as a decimal). For example, $50 at 7% = $50 × 0.07 = $3.50 tax, total $53.50. This free sales tax calculator does that instantly and also shows you the effective rate.

What's the reverse sales tax calculation?

If you know the total after tax and the tax rate, you can find the original price by dividing the total by (1 + rate). E.g., $107 total ÷ 1.07 = $100 before tax. The tool handles this automatically when you switch modes.

Do any states have no sales tax?

Yep — Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. The dropdown will show 0% for those. Just remember that some Alaskan cities still charge local sales tax.

Can I use this for business or resale calculations?

It's fine for quick estimates, but if you're reselling or filing taxes, you'll want to use official state rates and rules. The sales tax estimator is here to help you budget, not replace a tax professional.

Is this really free? No hidden stuff?

Totally free. I built this free online sales tax calculator for myself and just left it up. No ads, no email captures, no funny business. Just math that runs in your browser.
